The Canon EOS R50 is a compact mirrorless camera small enough to work as a travel camera and serious enough to be the only one you own. The body is 328 g on its own and 375 g with the battery and card in it, and the RF-S 18-45mm STM zoom in the kit covers wide to short telephoto, the range you actually use for street, travel and family. It is the Canon mirrorless camera most Canadians reach for when a phone stops being enough and a full-frame body is more than they need.
Autofocus that finds the subject for you. Dual Pixel CMOS AF II covers approximately 100% of the frame and divides it into as many as 651 zones, with deep-learning detection for people, animals (dogs, cats and birds) and vehicles such as cars and motorcycles. It behaves the same way in stills and in video. Burst shooting runs up to 12 frames per second with the electronic first-curtain shutter and up to 15 frames per second with the silent electronic shutter.
4K that is not cropped. The R50 oversamples 4K 30p from a 6K read of the 24.2 MP APS-C sensor, so there is no crop factor and no mush at the edges, and Full HD runs to 120 fps for slow motion. A single clip can pass the one-hour mark, which matters for podcasts and long-form video. Vertical Movie mode writes rotation data into the file, so the clip plays upright on a phone, and aspect markers let you frame one take for more than one platform. Over USB-C the camera also works as a UVC webcam at Full HD 30p with no extra software.
The parts a spec sheet usually buries. There is a 0.39-inch, 2.36-million-dot OLED electronic viewfinder (still uncommon at this price) alongside the 3.0-inch vari-angle touchscreen, a built-in flash and a 3.5 mm microphone input. There is no in-body stabilization: steadying comes from the optical IS in the kit lens. Storage is a single UHS-I SD card slot, and the LP-E17 battery charges inside the camera over USB-C.
